IAS Savita Pradhan’s Early Life and Educational Struggles

Savita Pradhan’s journey began in a humble tribal village where her family struggled to make ends meet. Despite the financial hardships, her parents valued education, a rarity in their community. With the help of a scholarship, Savita Pradhan convinced her parents to let her continue her studies, becoming the first girl in her village to complete Class 10. However, her ambition to pursue further education was met with more challenges. The nearest school was seven kilometers away, and the bus fare was beyond her family’s means. To support her education, her mother took up a modest job, and the family relocated closer to her school.

Savita’s academic interests leaned towards science, and she harbored dreams of becoming a doctor. Her dedication and hard work paid off, and she secured admission to a higher secondary school. However, at the age of 16, her life took a drastic turn when a wealthy family proposed marriage, and despite her protests, her parents arranged the marriage, abruptly halting her educational journey.

Enduring Domestic Abuse

Marriage brought an end to Savita’s educational aspirations and plunged her into a life of severe hardship and abuse. Her in-laws imposed numerous degrading restrictions on her. She was often deprived of food, forced to eat after everyone else, and even had to hide her meals to ensure she had enough to eat. Additionally, she was forbidden from expressing joy and laughter. The abuse extended beyond these restrictions; her husband was physically violent and regularly threatened her life.

The continuous assault and harassment took a toll on Savita. In a moment of utter despair, she decided to end her life. As she prepared to hang herself, her mother-in-law watched silently without intervening. However, when her husband attempted to harm their child, Savita’s maternal instincts kicked in, and she realized she had to fight for her children’s sake. She decided to leave her abusive marriage and carve out a new path for herself and her children.

Rebuilding Her Life

With only Rs 2700 in hand, Savita left her home with her two children, determined to start afresh. She established a beauty salon and offered tuition to children, working tirelessly to make ends meet. Her family stood by her, providing unwavering support as she enrolled in a BA program in Public Administration. Savita’s exceptional dedication and perseverance saw her excel in her studies, topping her examinations at Barkatullah University, Bhopal.

During her academic journey, Savita discovered the opportunity to appear for the state civil services exam. Recognizing it as a chance to secure a better future for her children, she undertook the challenge. At the age of 24, she cracked the exam on her first attempt and secured the esteemed position of chief municipal officer.

Rising Through the Ranks

Following her divorce, Savita’s life took another positive turn as she found love again and continued to ascend the ranks within the government. She currently holds the esteemed role of Joint Director of Urban Administration for the Gwalior and Chambal regions. Her story doesn’t end with personal success; she also runs a YouTube channel called ‘Himmat wali Ladkiyan,’ aimed at empowering women who face similar struggles.

Savita’s journey is a powerful reminder of the transformative power of education and resilience. She not only overcame her abusive marriage but also used her experiences to fuel her determination to succeed and help others.
